Why Do Planes Fly Over My House?

Short answer

Planes fly over the same houses repeatedly because arrivals and departures funnel through a small number of fixed waypoints. If your house sits under one, every aircraft using that procedure passes over the same spot. The pattern changes when the airport reverses its runway direction, which follows the wind.

If aircraft pass over your house repeatedly, it is almost never coincidence. You are under a published route, and there is a specific reason for it that does not change much day to day.

The two questions people actually ask are why it happens at all, and why it sometimes stops or moves. Both have straightforward answers.

Aircraft do not fly in straight lines between airports

Commercial aircraft follow published routes made of waypoints โ€” fixed positions defined by coordinates, each with a five-letter name. Arrivals and departures at every major airport funnel through a small number of these.

That funnelling is why the traffic concentrates. If your house sits under a waypoint or on the line between two of them, essentially every aircraft using that procedure passes over you, day after day, at roughly the same place in the sky.

Why the pattern changes

Aircraft take off and land into wind wherever possible, so when the wind direction changes, the airport switches which end of the runway it is using. Everything reverses: the houses that had arrivals now get departures, or nothing at all.

Some airports also alternate deliberately. Heathrow famously switches its landing runway part-way through the day specifically so the noise is shared rather than concentrated on the same communities.

Overnight the picture changes again. Most UK airports have night restrictions, so the aircraft still moving in the small hours tend to be cargo and long-haul arrivals โ€” a different, smaller set of flights, which is why the 5am aircraft often sounds different to the daytime ones.

Why they are sometimes much lower

Aircraft on final approach descend on a fixed glideslope, normally three degrees, so their height over your house should be consistent. When one seems markedly lower, the usual explanation is that it is not on the same procedure โ€” a go-around, a different runway in use, or a non-airline flight.

The other common cause is that it is not lower but louder: engine settings change through the approach, and a quiet aircraft at the same altitude can be followed by a loud one.
